A Unique Atmosphere Where Nahuatl and Totonac Cultures Converge

What kind of town is it?

Quetzalan Village. It is a small mountain village located about 5 hours from Mexico City. As it deviates significantly from the typical tourist routes for foreign travelers, not many people are familiar with it.

It is situated in the state of Puebla, but it is located on a small peninsula-like area that juts into Veracruz state, at the northernmost part of Puebla.

Culturally, it is an area where the Nahuatl and Totonac people mix. About 30 minutes away from the village, you can find the first Totonac culture city, Yohualichan ruins. Even today, some residents in the village still speak Nahuatl as their first language.

Exploring the town’s streets is enjoyable.

Delicious Coffee

Although it’s a quaint place, the town’s beautiful streets are delightful for strolling, and you can savor tasty regional dishes like Mole.

In supermarkets, coffee shelves are packed with various brands, each with different origins and prices. Of course, they also offer different flavors!

Coffee has become an essential part of our daily lives. People in Japan are even attempting to cultivate coffee in places like Okinawa and the Ogasawara Islands.

Mexico is renowned for coffee cultivation in states such as Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. In the Americas, Mexico ranks third in coffee production, after Brazil and Colombia. However, it seems that Mexican coffee is scarcely exported to Japan, while neighboring Guatemala’s coffee ranks as the fifth highest imported to Japan.

Transform Your Coffee Perspective

Nowadays, there are plenty of trendy cafes, and spending time with coffee has become something special that people are willing to pay for. Let’s put aside detailed technical discussions about roasting, grading, varieties, and coffee. What makes a coffee delicious for you?

For me, of course, factors like origin, grade, and variety do affect the taste elements like acidity, sweetness, and body. However, the most enjoyable coffee is the morning coffee at the coffee farm or the coffee shared with the farmers who cultivated it.

In the tranquility of nature, away from noises like cars and music, waking up to the songs of birds, and enjoying freshly brewed coffee on the terrace. This is not a scene from a pretentious movie; it’s something anyone can experience right here, in Mexico.

While you’re in Mexico, why not taste some delicious, nameless coffee? It might change the fundamental emotions you associate with coffee.

Guided Tour to Totonac Culture Ruins

We will take you to visit the early city of the Totonac culture, the Jowalichan ruins, which flourished in the central-eastern region of Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico side. Construction of this city started around 200 AD, and it served as the capital of the Totonac people until around 600 AD, when the capital functions were transferred to El Tajin. This culture played a significant role during the early stages of colonization, assisting the Spanish alongside the Tlaxcalans when they conquered the powerful Aztec empire, known as the Mexica Empire, which was dominant in Veracruz in 1519.
