Cultural Exchange Experience with a Local Family in Oaxaca

A Memorable Moment in Oaxaca

When you think of Oaxaca, there are plenty of attractions such as the Zapotec cultural ruins of Monte Albán and Mitla, the intricately carved folk art known as Alebrijes, the Mexican rugs called Tapetes often featured on television, and the Oaxaca city center, which, along with the Monte Albán ruins, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. These fascinating sights draw travelers from all around the world.

If you’re traveling to Mexico and especially to Oaxaca, why not add some extra experiences to your journey?

Beyond visiting ruins, buying folk art, and strolling through Oaxaca’s streets, we offer you experiences that will remain etched in your memory and touch your heart.

Through interaction with local families who still speak the Zapotec language as their first language, you can personally experience the everyday life of people in your travel destination.

Currently, we have three activities available. One is the Oaxacan cooking experience, the second is the creation of Tapetes, the famous Mexican rugs, and the third is a Zapotec language class. You can choose to experience one, two, or all three activities – it’s up to you!

While Oaxaca has become a renowned tourist destination in the world, many visitors are unaware of how the dishes served to tourists or the folk art displayed in shops are made and what meanings they carry. Through our experiences, you will gain insights into the background of Oaxacan products, making your journey in Oaxaca even more meaningful.

Oaxacan Cooking Experience

This is an exchange experience with a local Zapotec family. It begins with a visit to the market together to shop for ingredients.

Tapete (Mexican Rug) Making Experience

Currently, it is made of sheep’s wool, but before sheep were imported from Europe, it was made of cotton.

During the time of the Aztec’s renowned Mexica Empire, there is a historical account of a large quantity of textiles being delivered to the empire as tribute from this region.

Everything is done by hand, without relying on machines or chemical dyes.
